A compact, fine-grained rock with a splintery fracture, commonly with a finely banded aspect due to alternating grey, green or reddish layers of variable colour intensity; composed of fine to very fine grained mosaic of albite and subordinate quartz with minor amounts of other consitutents. Chemically it contains up to 10% by weight of soda, hence adinolization is a Na-metasomatic process leading to the formation of this rock.
