Named by L. Žák, J. Frýda, W.G. Mumme, and W.H. Paar in 1994 in honour of Professor Emil Makovicky (18 August 1940, Bratislava, Slovakia – ), Slovak–Danish mineralogist, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark. The mineral emilite is also named after him.
Lies at the intersection of the pavonite homologous series and the proudite-felbertalite homologous series.
