Name:
Named by Yu.M. Dymkov, T.I. Loseva, E.N. Zavyalov, B.I. Ryzhov, and L.I. Bocheck in 1982 in honor of the Moscow Geological Exploration Institute (Moskovskogo Geologro Razvedounogo Instituta or MGRI) the institute where the mineral was discovered. The institute is now named the Russian State Geological Prospecting University.
