Named in 1982 by V. A. Kovalenka, V. S. Malov, T. L. Evstigneeva, and L. S. Vyals in honor of Günter Harald Moh (May 2, 1929 - May 13, 1993), professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. A specialist in ore and experimental mineralogy, he performed numerous studies on sulphide systems and first synthesised the compound.

Synthetic Cu2SnS3 apparently has two low-temperature polymorphs: a monoclinic one (Onoda et al., 2000; probably identical to mohite) and a (disordered) stannite-type structure (Chen et al., 1998). A phase transition occurs 780°C, leading to a sphalerite-type structure.
