About Pumpellyite GroupHide

Ca2XZ2[Si2O6(OH)][SiO4](OH)2A
X = Mg, Fe2+, Fe3+, Al, Mn2+, V3+
Z = Al, Fe3+, Mn3+, V3+, Cr3+
A = OH, O

If there are trivalent ions on the X position, oxide ions replace hydroxide ions on the A position for charge balance. The root name of the species is determined by the dominant ion on the Z position:

Z = Al: Pumpellyite
Z = Fe3+: Julgoldite
Z = Mn3+: Okhotskite
Z = V3+: Poppiite
Z = Cr3+: Shuiskite

The dominant ion on the X position is appended in parentheses to the root name. Though this is presently not done for okhotskite and poppiite, as only one of each species has been found in nature so far.
Name:
Named for the most widely-found mineral in the group, pumpellyite.
Nagashima et al. (2010) showed that the site-assignment rules of Passaglia & Gottardi (1973) can lead to a wrong identification of a specific member in the group if only EPMA data are available; structure refinements are necessary.
