From the greek μαλακός (malakos=soft) because the mineral is softer than ordinary zircon (Scheerer, Annalen der Physik 1844, p. 436).
A variety of Zircon

Malacon is an altered hydrated Zircon with curved, rounded crystals. An alternative spelling is "Malakon"
