Colour:
Dark brown
Name:
Found by H.M.T. Esmark and named after the Swedish geologist Axel Joakim Erdmann (1814-1869)
An inadequately described mineral probably related to melanocerite-(Ce). It was first described as a dark brown mineral from Stokkøya, Langesundsfjorden, Norway by Berlin (1853). An analysis made by Blomstrand indicated an alumosilicate of REE, Fe and Ca. Brøgger (1890) suggested that the mineral was a mixture of altered melanocerite with homilite.
Both Berlin (1853) and Brøgger (1890) also pointed out that many of the mineral specimens labelled erdmannite at the time in fact was altered zircon.
Michalson (1863) analysed an allanite-like mineral from Arøya, Langesundsfjorden. He suggested that it was related to the erdmannite analyzed by Blomstrand. This mineral was again referred to as michaelsonite in Dana (1868).
To further complicate the picture, Engström (1877) also analyzed a mineral he thought to be identical to erdmannite. See Erdmannite (of Engström and Des Cloizeaux & Damour) for further details.
