Note: The official IMA name for this mineral species was uvite, redefined as part of a nomenclature revision of the Tourmaline group (Henry et al., 2011). However, the approval was withdrawn by IMA in 2018 (IMA 2000-030a), analysis showed that the typematerial may be a potentially new oxy-tourmaline.

Most specimens historically listed as uvite analyses as being the F-dominant end member, fluor-uvite, which is much more common.

To avoid confusion between current and historical usage of this name, we have added 'OH-dominant end-member' to the name. If your analysis of an 'uvite' specimen or occurrence indicates this to be the case, this is the entry you should add, not 'fluor-uvite' or just 'uvite'. Without analysis, just add as the 'uvite' name which now, on mindat.org, refers to the sub-group of these two species.

Note that although Brumado, Brazil, is the newly defined (Henry et al., 2011) type locality for uvite, it is not possible to assign "uvites" from Brumado to this species without a reliable analysis as specimens have been analysed with both OH- and F-dominant compositions.
