Named in 1929 by Wilhelm Kunitz for the type locality, Uva Province, Sri Lanka. Chemical pre-fix added by IMA in 2008.
The F-analogue of (the much rarer) uvite (OH-dominant end-member).

NOTE: Most of the numerous "uvites/fluor-uvites" from Brumado, Bahia, Brazil, require individual confirmation.
