About Unnamed Organometallic Se PhaseHide

Formed in vents (in the smoldering Anna coaldump) with a temperature of around 80°C, near kremersite-bearing vents, as bright lemon-yellow, transparent crystals with an adamantine luster. The phase forms prismatic to acicular crystals that are often twinned.

The X-ray powder diffraction data does not fit any phase in the ICDD-PDF database. EDS analyses showed only Se but no other elements with atomic number greater than 7. A single-crystal structure analysis yielded the preliminary data: orthorhombic cell, probably Pmn21, a = 3.811, b = 7.874, c = 14.421 Å. Only part of the crystal structure could be solved due to problems of twinning and relatively low crystal quality; the phase seems to contain Se atoms attached to organic ring molecules. The phase occurs together with sulfate minerals.
