The supergroup has its name after the generic name gadolinite.
The Gadolinite Supergroup includes mineral species that have the general chemical formula A2MQ2T2O8φ2 and includes silicates, phosphates and aresenates. The supergroup is divided in two groups; the Gadolinite Group and the Herderite Group. The Gadolinite Group is further divided in two subgroups: the Gadolinite Subgroup and the Datolite Subgroup. The Herderite Group is also divided in two subgroups: the Herderite Subgroup and Drugmanite Subgroup.
