Colour:
Honey-yellow
Hardness:
6 - 6½
Specific Gravity:
3.2673
Name:
Named by Axel Erdmann (1824) for Dr.med pharmacist Lars Monrad (1762-1836), owner of a noted pharmacy, Løveapotheket in Bergen, Norway. Monrad had some years earlier send a sample of an unidentified mineral found in the Bergen area, Norway, to the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius, which later gave it to Erdmann, who analyzed it.
First Recorded Locality:
An inadequately described mineral. May be an altered, serpentinzed pyroxene group mineral. It is described with two cleavages making an angle of about 130°, which, as Raade (1996) comments, is not consistent with the view that the mineral is an altered pyroxene.
Note: The locality given by Erdmann for monradite is the unprecise and wide "Bergens stift", an area that at the time covered the whole western part of Norway including the Hordaland, Møre og Romsdal and Sogn og Fjordane counties.
