Unnamed (Iron Carbide)

A material that is NOT an approved mineral species

Formula:
Fe7C3
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Compare other Fe carbides: cohenite and haxonite.

The composition fits that of the so-called 'chalypite'.

Forms lamellae, 100-500 nm in size, within inclusions in lower-mantle diamond. The lamellae cut 'Unnamed (Iron Carbonitride)'.

Co-described with associated 'Unnamed (Iron Nitride I)', 'Unnamed (Iron Nitride II)', silicon carbide (possibly moissanite), Mn-rich xieite, and other oxide(s). Other, earlier phases coexisting, are nyerereite, nahcolite, calcite, wüstite, and periclase.

The phase is among a solid solution(s) thay may be described as M5(C,N)3 - M23(C,N)6, with M/(C,N) ratio in the 1.65 to 3.98 range.

Likely formed due to infiltration of liquid metal (with some lighter elements), coming from the outer core to the D" layer.
