Named by Haidinger in honour of Count (Graf) August Breunner (family name also given as Breuner) (born 30 June 1796, died 23 April 1877 in Vienna, Austria), an Austrian Ministerialrat (high-ranking state official) and collector of minerals and fossils.

A ferroan variety of magnesite with the Mg:Fe atomic ratio ranging from 90:10 to 70:30.
