Named in 1955 by A. R. Graham in allusion to the mineral's chemical composition.
The Ce analogue of uraninite and thorianite. The most simple Ce mineral known.

One of three currently recognized minerals with tetravalent cerium, beside dyrnaesite-(La) and stetindite.
