Search for Photos

Enter a mineral name (eg Almandine), and part of a region name (eg Alaska) and this search will find all photos from localities within the region of that mineral. Select type of photo to search and either check all photos or select a subtype for the photos. Alternatively, enter a keyword or photograph type and optionally a locality or mineral name. If you are just looking for photos of a mineral or from a location, the photo gallery links on the mineral and locality pages are easier to use.

MVQ-WNRQuartz

Afghanistan

3 phase fluid inclusions in small "Herkimer diamond" style double terminated quartz.
The 3 phases are liquid, in the form of yellow plant oil/petroleum, gas, in the form of 3 small bubbles which move from side to side as the crystal is tilted, the gas could be methane. And finally, solid which are tiny specks of black material which is carbon or anthraxolite.
The seller describes the inclusions as being half a billion years old but I cannot find any evidence to back that up.
The oil inclusions fluoresce brightly under long wave ultra violet light as shown by the photo.
There also appears to be tiny crystals inside the main crystal which I believe are known as negative crystals.
I am unsure of the exact location of these crystals but they are often called Afghan diamonds, I think they are from the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.
The crystal is 9mm long

NYL-GR2Hackmanite

Koksha Valley, Khash & Kuran Wa Munjan Districts, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

A matrix of marble and Richterite contains some minor crystals of gemmy sodalite var. hackmanite. Perched on top is a 1.7cm X 1.8cm crystal of gemmy transparent hackmanite. The colour variation is very good: ranging from royal purple in daylight, to fire orange under UV, blue under dim light after UV, and sulphur yellow phosphorescence. Although the crystal is not perfect - it has Richterite inclusions and is inperfect/damaged at the back. The size, colour, clarity and the visible terminations make it a very unusual specimen. It remains to be said the crystal could be eased from the matrix - and displayed upside down to the way it is shown in the photos.Listed on eBay 24 August 2002 - Reserve Price = $40 - Item Ref:2134414789.

5WX-89EHackmanite, Phlogopite

Multiple photos available
Koksha Valley, Khash & Kuran Wa Munjan Districts, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 8.3 cm x 5.4 cm x 4.2 cm

8.3 x 5.4 x 4.2 cm. Hackmanite is the sodium-rich variety of sodalite and is very rare world-wide. This excellent combination specimen is dominated by the large for the variety, sharp, glassy and translucent, shades of lavender, hackmanite crystal set on more hackmanite and a bit of matrix. A yellow-orange inclusion is noted at the bottom of the crystal and is rare phlogopite. The hackmanite has ghostly white fluorescence and also has sulfur-yellow phosphorescence. The phlogopite has incredible neon-orange fluorescence and turns into a black hole after the UV is turned off. Ex. Herb Obodda specimen.
