About Thulite
Formula:
{Ca2}{Al,Mn3+3}(Si2O7)(SiO4)O(OH)
Colour:
pink
Name:
Named after "Thule", the ancient name of Scandinavia (and mythical island).
First Recorded Locality:
A variety of Zoisite
A pink variety of zoisite, frequently manganian, i.e. containing trivalent Mn (not manganoan, which refers to divalent Mn). Originally described from Kleppan, Sauland, Hjartdal, Telemark, Norway.
NOTE: "Thulite" from granite pegmatites and some metamorphic rocks is frequently the clinothulite variety of clinozoisite and not true zoisite.

Geological Environment
Geological Setting:
Much of the so-called thulite from granite pegmatites, particularly in North Carolina, has proven to be clinothulite (Richard C. Erd, unpublished data, 1996).
