Named after John Sampson White, Jr. (b. 1933), associate curator of minerals, Smithsonian institution; founder, editor and publisher (1970-1982) of the Mineralogical Record. It was named at the same time as whiteite-(CaFeMg), where the suffixes indicate the dominant cations in the X, M(1), and M(2) structural positions.
