Excelsior Tunnel

Entrance

Excelsior Mine, Stokeclimsland, Cornwall, England, UK

Entrance to the tunnel on the east side of Kit Hill, the site of Operation Orpheus in the 1950s.
This is being 'securely' gated in mid 2007.

Second gate

The first 40 feet of the tunnel has been built up with a stone arch and a second gate fitted about 30 feet in.

Excelsior Tunnel

At the junction of the built up arch, where the tunnel begins a drive directly in the killas (slate) country rock. This short section of corrugated tin has been put in to stop small rock falls and has a interesting collection of stalagtites.

Granite intrusion

In several places small benches have been cut into the tunnel sides and in this one near the entrance where the tunnel is still in the killas 2 small veinlets of intruding granite have been exposed.
