An old Volvo tractor/shovel

Åvesland 08 Feldspar Quarry, Åvesland, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

This Volvo tractor/shovel might have been used to load the feldspar an a truck.

It's condition is good enough to use it in a historical exhibition about the feldspar mining.

The Åvesland 08 Feldspar Quarry

Åvesland 08 Feldspar Quarry, Åvesland, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

Old feldspar quarries can still be usefull as garage...

Obviously this quarry has not yielded any significant amount of feldspar, and nothing is known about any mineral finds.

The dump is situated near the shore of the lake and is not suitable for collecting.

From what can be seen in the walls of the quarry, there is no obvious reason to suspect the presence of collectable minerals.

268-JFHPegmatite

Høvringsvatnet, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

Field of View: 1 m

All around the Høvringsvatnet lake there are exposures showing aplites and pegmatites originating from the granite/monzonite intrusion.

The rock shown here has a seemingly pegmatitic corn size (2-5 cm), but is lacking zonation.

There are two types of feldspar, the clealry visible reddish brown microcline, and the unfortunately not so well visible white albite (?).

The composition will probably be close to granite or quartz monzonite.

The coordinates are not 100% guaranteed, but at least not far off: 58.658529772112445,7.941556870937347.

Amphibolite breccia

Multiple photos available
Høvringsvatnet, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

The Høvringsvatnet granite/monzonite intrusion has heavily affected the surrounding rocks.

Due to the fact that the area is a recreational area with hundreds of cabins and bungalows spread out around the lake, there are (currently) many fresh roadcuts, presenting an unique opportunity to study the geology.

This seems to be a breccia of amphibolite glued together by granite/monzonite.

The approximate coordinates of this exposure are: 58.65866021533557,7.940050810575486

Pretty messed up rocks...

Geiruvstjønn Rock Quarry, Høvringsvatnet, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

Even though the picture is pretty poor, it is still possible to see the extent to which the host rock is penetrated by dozens of aplite veins, most likely originating from the granite/monzonite.

4GH-DX4Amphibolite

Høvringsvatnet, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

Field of View: 3 m

Nicely shaped boulder of amphibolite with a thin vein of granitic composition.

Very well visible is that the ampholite is less resistant to erosion than the white vein.

The remains of the Einerkilen Uranium Mine

Åvesland 04 Uranium Mine, Åvesland, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

This picture of unknown date (1977-80?) shows the remains of the Einerkilen Uranium Mine.

The mine was shortly active in 1949-1951, but was abandoned due to disappointing percentages of uranium in the ore.

Nowadays also these remains are largely gone, and only with difficulty one can find some concrete structures in between the trees.

At the left in the picture, it is possible to see a quarry which still exists (2019). In the left wall there is an adit.

The uranium ore was principally mined through a vertical shaft, with horizontal shafts stretching till under the lake.

The remains of the Einerkilen Uranium Mine

Åvesland 04 Uranium Mine, Åvesland, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

After the Einerkilen Uranium Mine was abandoned in 1951, most of the buildings and machinery raidly disappeared.

This picture of unknown date (1970-80???) shows some concrete structures that are nowadays almost completely gone.

Older picture of Landsverk 1 quarry

Landsverk 1 Feldspar Quarry, Landsverk, Evje og Hornnes, Aust-Agder, Norway

This picture, taken by Hildur Håkås, must be considerably older than 2005, the date in the EXIF.

When I visited the Evje Mineralsti in 1997, much of the left wall had been blasted away for minerals.
