Wheal Maid Tailings

Wheal Maid, St Day, Gwennap, Cornwall, England, UK

View of the eastern tailings lake looking east.

Notice the grey sand in the bottom right of the photo. This is the tailings material and is composed of mostly silt and pyrite (close up of tailings material found here: https://www.mindat.org/photo-884686.html). On a sunny day, the tailings can be seen to sparkle due to its pyrite rich composition; it is nicknamed 'pyrite beach'.

Notice the dark red hue to the water as a result of iron contamination from the pyrite. This water is highly acidic at pH 3.
