About 2013, the new blast at the Varennes Quarry proved to be mostly uninteresting and enthusiasts (it was pouring rain) collected in the piles of larger rocks which would later be prepared for crushing. Here we found a good number of oval, rather shallow lenses which contained several excellent quality, but not rare, minerals. Also present were surfaces of fissures that were heavily covered by Rinkite, Astrophyllite and Läventite, the latter was of exceptional quality. Here and there among these minerals, were found groups of very small and fine milky white hairs that could well have passed for Calcite. (Most Varennes Calcite is yellow but white crystals are known in various sizes). These hairs were submitted for EDS identification but without a definitive result. They remained interesting and were recently resubmitted for XRD with a group of other specimens. This time the result was an identification of Kochite, a mineral found first in Greenland and later in Norway, Spain, Italy and Brazil but not in Canada or the United States. Collected by Robin Tibbit and in his collection Photographed with Nikon Coolpix 995 on a Meiji Techno RZ scope, and stacked with Helicon Focus.
