Axinite-(Fe), Actinolite, Feldspar Group

Ghost Lake area, Independence Township, Jenny Jump Mountain, Warren County, New Jersey, USA

This was the only good/intact specimen of axinite-Fe that I managed to find after pounding through some pale feldspar collected near Ghost Lake in Jenny Jump State Park, near Hackettstown, New Jersey. The thumbnail specimen I mounted was mainly feldspar (albite?) with a 5 mm cavity that contained axinite crystals of ~2.0 mm and bundles of ...

Fairly Low Cave

Shaft Shrouded in Fog

Davis Mine, Independence Township, Jenny Jump Mountain, Warren County, New Jersey, USA

I had been looking for this old iron mine for years with its allure of secondary copper mineralization. Two weeks ago I finally found it. Within two minutes of my arrival, a rather severe storm rolled in giving me a bone to pick with the weatherman who called for "just a chance of a spot shower." Thankfully, I don't hike anywhere without foul ...

Stinson Mine

Stinson Mine, Independence Township, Jenny Jump Mountain, Warren County, New Jersey, USA

I came upon this mine accidentally, the result of walking down the wrong trail. It is one of the few places where Rhodonite has been reported in the State of New Jersey. I would have loved to pick through the rock and find some but the mosquitos were some of the worst I have ever encountered. July of 2011. At least I know where to return to.
