David Horton Mine, Mount Freedom, Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey, USA

Another example of a mine hidden in plain sight. This area is on a road I've driven on hundreds and hndreds of times. But the other day, what looked like an old rail spur proceeding into the woods attracted my attention. Three hundred feet off the road is a large mining complex with shafts, tailings and foundations. I found a fair amount of coal in the vicinity of this foundation so perhaps there was some machinery here at one time.

This shaft has been partially filled up with rock. Still, it is about ten feet deep.
