Chalcanthite

United States Strategic Metals, Fredericktown, Fredericktown Mining District, Madison County, Missouri, USA

Bright blue chalcanthite is a rarity from Missouri. I got this one from Art Hebrank (current as of 2017 curator/site administrator of the Missouri Mines State Historic Site) when he was with the Missouri Geological Survey. He collected a small batch of these post-mining specimens at Madison Mine.

Galena, Sphalerite

United States Strategic Metals, Fredericktown, Fredericktown Mining District, Madison County, Missouri, USA

Dark gray→black cubic galena xls on a black xln sphalerite matrix; 1 prominent galena cube shows sharply modified corners. A black, bladed xln sphalerite mass occurs on the specimen top. Sphalerite shows an orange LWUV fl response. Not the “prettiest,” but a rare locality specimen from an historic, obscure Missouri mine.
