Ma On Shan iron mine magnetite
Purple fluorite. Nice cubic shape. The bigger crystal around 4 x 3 mm. Can see cleavage, if no cleavage this is perfect piece.
Ma On Shan iron mine magnetite, it is a big one.
Magnetite on the rock.
Diopside rock, have 1mm to 3mm small crystals, this specimen confirmed by FTIR.
Cubic pyrite on massive calcite, pyrite size around 4 x 3.5 to 2 x 1 mm, when I got this specimen, I think it is pyrite on the quartz. Checked with FTIR that I know this is calcite. The calcite have some special smell.
A tiny but nicely crystallized fluorite from a historical mine in Hong Kong. Old specimen.
Biotite and Muscovite growth together.
Vein of serpentine with talc, as found in situ in the underground works
Block with serpentine group mineral, as found in the underground works
Actinolite on the rock, fiber habit, crystal is deep green in strong tungsten light but cannot show in the photo. In this rock some position have magnetic, proved mix with magnetite.
Many around 0.5-1.0 mm purple fluorite. Because fluorite hardness is 4 only. Cannot get perfect and large crystal in Ma On Shan.
Many small rock crystal, some position has cubic shape which is fluorite. Before I had been Ma On Shan Iron Mine no quartz. I was wrong.
Milky white serpentine find in Ma On Shan Iron Mine. Coarse fibers can be seen. Bottom left phase with grey colour is massive fluorite. This specimen was confirmed by FTIR. I do not know the grey part what mineral before check.
Dark green. Very nice radial shape.
Post mining growth of gypsum in the underground works walls
Nice biotite and muscovite growth together.
Muscovite and biotite. In my personal opinion, Ma On Shan mica is the best mica in Hong Kong.
Ma On Shan flake calcite. Classic shape. Very difficult to find nice piece right now.
Ma On Shan Iron Mine an image at October 2019, this is a big different compare with old photo. Now it is looks like a forest and government build up a wall to avoid people go inside the mine. The 110M.L. is meaning meters above sea level. Old rails are under the water.
240M.L. is great different with old photo. Now no words and build up a wall.
This old fluorite was mined in Ma On Shan Iron Mine. It is showing in the chapel for visitors watch.
The chapel was for miners worship, but now it is hall for mine history and activities room.
Unknown function, maybe for prospecting.
Ma On Shan open pit. It is forest right now because the mine stop running a long time. This place also call sky beyond sky.
Old stones were mined in Ma On Shan Iron Mine. They are showing in the chapel for visitors watch.
Ma On Shan mine collapsed.
Introduce Ma On Shan Iron Mine history.
It was a security on duty place, empty now.
Near the hall where is cafe for visitors short break.
