Elbaite, Schorl

Palelni mine, Khetchel village, Molo quarter, Momeik Township, Kyaukme District, Shan State, Myanmar

In this case the best of the medium sized specimens from the find. Very unusual with the Sphere of Elbaite at the top complete, brilliant, and well positioned on the Calcite matrix. The lower half of the specimen is complex: there is a thick crystal of Schorl that passes through the calcite and is terminated at its upper end. Around the Schorl is ...

Elbaite, Schorl

Palelni mine, Khetchel village, Molo quarter, Momeik Township, Kyaukme District, Shan State, Myanmar

2.2 x 1.9 x .8 cm. This is really quite an amazing Elbaite. The crystal consists of a lustrous and gemmy raspberry red Elbaite overgrowth on a schorl core. The form and aesthetics of the overall piece are incredible, as if it was something out of an enchanted forest. Ex. Wendell E. Wilson Collection.

Tourmaline (Var: Rubellite), Microcline

Palelni mine, Khetchel village, Molo quarter, Momeik Township, Kyaukme District, Shan State, Myanmar

This specimen hosts some of the most vivid red, lustrous, beautiful tourmalines I have yet seen from Burma for the style ("mushrooms"). They really ARE this juicy, in person. Maybe more so. What is amazing to me is that they drape over a euhedral large feldpsar crystal and so you get a most unusual contrast. I have not seen such a nice association ...

Tourmaline (Var: Rubellite), Schorl, Albite

Palelni mine, Khetchel village, Molo quarter, Momeik Township, Kyaukme District, Shan State, Myanmar

This is one of the single best examples I have seen of the so-called "mushroom" tourmalines from late 1990s finds in Burma. Herb Obodda had this piece tucked away when I obtained his collection, and it has a great balance to it in form. It has saturated, intense magenta color, and a bit of sparkle that some of these simply lack. The rubellite ...

2.3 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm. A translucent, raspberry-red, trigonal tourmaline crystal from the well-known finds in Burma.
