Minot Maine minerals.

Last Updated: 2nd Aug 2014

By Carson Armstrong

Approximately 2.5 years ago, I discovered a 1" green beryl in a quartz outcrop in the woods not far from my house. Upon further inspection. I discovered a large pegmatite (about 25'x 100')about 10 feet away from the beryl find. I started clearing the trees, dirt and moss away from the site and discovered large quartz and pegmatite outcrops. There is one large hole in the perfect shape of a garnet, and not more that 5 feet away, I found a large muscovite chunk, the past few days I began to remove layers and layers of mica after removing about 6" of mica I came upon two large near interconnected schorl crystals. Neither was terminated but both had facets and were about 4"x 1". I was able to remove these partially intact. upon removal, a large sheet of feldspar became freed and revealed the top of a 6"x 8" schorl crystal. it was absolutely huge and very smooth on the top. I kept removing muscovite around the area and found a few weeds growing out of the rock. The first shimmers of excitement came the plants, the schorl the mica, it all leads to one possibility, a pocket. I'm hoping to continue excavating the area tomorrow. If you have any idea what these signs may lead to, please contact me at carsonna9@gmail.com or in the comments. Thanks
