Techniques for CollectorsCommercial Raman service?

24th May 2013 21:46 UTCRonnie Van Dommelen 🌟 Manager

Hi All,

I'm wondering if there are any companies offering a Raman identification service. There seem to be several that offer microprobe and XRD but I cannot find any that offer Raman.

Thanks in advance.

You might try and contact Bear Williams at http://stonegrouplabs.com/wp/?page_id=14 You have something that FTIR won't crack?

Raman isn't (yet) a reliable tool for 100% identification.

It can be useful for specific tasks, such as "Is this mineral X or mineral Y" or in gemology for detecting certain kinds of treatments, but it's far from a magic system that can identify unknown minerals - at least not yet.

Where can I get RAMAN done for less than $50US?

Reiner,

I still haven't had anything Ramaned commercially yet. I think there is a market - if somebody wants a side business....

I do Raman in Australia for $15.00 per sample. Minimum sample size about 1mm. There is no guarantee the method will work for all samples, but I do not charge if it does not produce a workable signal. See http://www.geologynet.com/services.htm. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether you want to send it to AU. The method works best for confirming mineral ID, rather than identifying complete unknowns.

Thanks Bob I will take you up on it. I want to determine if my sample is rinkite or mosandrite so it should work for that.

Hello Bob,

The link you gave does not work. What is your mailing address?

The link has a dot at the end too much! Delete that and the link works!
