Field CollectingFinding Geodes

5th Sep 2004 02:48 UTCKimberly

What does one look for when looking for geodes? How do you know if you have a geode?

Where can they usually be found? Is there a certain type of location that they occur?

Are there any places in San Diego(or nearby) to find them?

Thanks for your help!!

Cheers All!!

Not real close to San Diego but:

Don't let the pictures scare you; the roads are easily travelled with a sedan.

OH MY GOD!!!

Thank you so much Dave!! That is not too far for me. Imperial County is where I have done most of my collecting.

I really appreciate your help!!

I wouldn't say _easily_ with a sedan... ;-) but then I've seen big motorhomes pretty far into that area. Though I have 4wd I didn't use it all the way in to the Hauser Beds. Decent ground clearance is probably the biggest factor. And be sure your spare tire is fully inflated before going into the area, take plenty of water etc etc.

I'm planning a trip out there this fall (when things cool off-no firm dates yet), and you are welcome to join us. Email me off board if you're interested.

I thought they stopped making sedans when Dragnet went off the air. The criminals were always escaping in late model sedans, usually green or blue. Before Dragnet I thought sedans were fancy chairs carried by footmen.

Maybe geodes float, or sink slowly, similar to the fast spinning boiled egg analogy?

Hi!

I was wondering how do you find a geode? Are there any to be found in Landers, Ca.? I don't know what I'm looking for. Can you help?

Thanks,

Tammy

Hi Tammy

Geodes are only found in specific geologic environments - they are not found just anywhere. The best way to figure out where they are found is to visit the nearest mineral club and ask members about them. Guide books to mineral localities might also help; and these are something else the members of a mineral club will know about - specifically if there are any for the area in which you live.

I don't know if the website is still functional, but rockhounds.com used to have a link to a list of mineral clubs around the United States. If you can get to the Table of Contents page, scroll down to the link to the list of American Federation clubs, then click on that. The list is organized by state.

Alan

My Granddaughter is fascinated with rocks, etc especially crystals and geodes. I am looking for a place to actually dig them up. An excursion that would not be too difficult for a senior. Granddaughter is 10

I too thought fall would be a good time for weather. We live in San Diego. Something not too far. Do you know of any guided tours, etc.

Thanks, Carole

CAROLE, For a casual collector with a youngster, there are not many open and easily accessed sites with collectible geodes anywhere near San Diego. For other minerals, I am not sure. Your best bet would be to hook up with the local rock and mineral club(s). Other Mindat users nearer to where you live might know of open sites for collectors like yourselves. Sorry I cannot be of more help. CHEERS……..BOB

Dear Carole;

It would be good for you to find a nearby rock club; going to Bob's Rock Shop (Google it) & looking under their "clubs list" in the state you wish, should give you a contact, that will help you. Maybe even guide you there or take you in their 4-wheeler, in need be; rockhounds usually are generous people to newby rockhounds.

Your friend, Steve

My US map of geode sites. Not meant to be 100% complete or accurate, it still shows most of the areas where diligent searching might produce some collectible geodes. Many small localized sites, in addition to these probably exist, but most are very small with relatively few collectible examples being found. Note that the Midwest, by far, is the best area for geode hunting. Virtually no geode sites are found East of the Appalachians, thru the South and the Southwest This same map also appeared a couple of years ago on the Midwest geode thread on this website. CHEERS…..BOB
