My best advice would be to find out where the nearest rock/mineral club is located to you and go to one of their meetings to inquire about safe, legal collecting sites. I have provided a link below to help you find such a club.

I read the first answer is join a club but it's a little light. Nothing bad, no, but I think most people are just travelling or shortly visiting and might not have the time or dedication to join a club locally. No your best bet is the internet , and to start to help, an example with this Oregon rock hounding Gator Girl site:

Basically any of the creeks and watersheds in your area are going to be good places to find agate and chalcedony. Both the North and the South Fork of the Umpqua and anywhere along Myrtle Creek are fairly productive. Really though, this is a good time of year to plop yourself down on any creekside gravel bar you see and poke around. You're sure to find more than a few keepers!
