Field CollectingVacationing in North Idaho/Western Montana

23rd Jun 2015 17:03 UTCJason Ferguson

My annual Fishing trip is almost upon me! I will be in Sandpoint Idaho and at a Cabin on Bull Lake (30 miles south of Troy Montana) on July 18th - 26th.

I first got into rocks and minerals outside of Gold because i walked into the Local Rock shop (ZeroPoint) in Sandpoint and fell in love.I figured maybe if someone could share some info on if there are any places near by i could rockhound for maybe a day i would be able to take home a keep sake from the place i fell in love with this hobby of mine.

Any info would be nice, Most my time will be spent in the Sandpoint Area, about 3 days on Bull lake Montana.

Thank you in advance! If you happen to be in the North or East Bay California, ill return the favor and take you out to a couple of spot i know!

Jason,

I'm not sure exactly where you will be, ( I didn't take the time to look up your location) but if you get the chance, it will be well worth your time to drive down to Spencer, Idaho and check out the opal mines there. I have traveled through that area many times and each stop in Spencer has been rewarding. Bob & Susan Thompson run the Opal Mountain Mine there and they are wonderful folks. They have sold their mine but will still be running their store in Spencer. They are gracious and helpful, not to mention the opal that they sell is amazing!

Bob can even direct you to a spot nearby to collect some Idaho sunstones.

If you can, give them a visit.

JASON, As I have mentioned here a couple of times in the past, I lived in Spokane from 1971 - 1976 and collected casually several times while out there. Despite times being different you just might find an outcrop containing green malachite and bright blue azurite all set on a white matrix. The locality was on a logging road , right on the Washington - Idaho border very near to the hamlet of Nordman, Idaho which is NW of Sandpoint. The outcrop was easy to collect and set back about 30' from the West side of the road. Enjoy yourself out there; I still remember those boating days on the lake like they were yesterday. CHEERS……BOB
