GeneralAPI Key

1st Jan 2016 16:25 UTCPaul Brandes 🌟 Manager

I was updating some of my details on my homepage and at the bottom there was a box with an "API Key" and instructions to keep it secure. What is this key, why is it important, and how does it affect my use of Mindat?

Thanks,

Paul

The API key is to allow third party applications to be able to communicate with mindat and to to be able to share information - for example catalogue software that wants to be able to post photos to mindat on your behalf.

It is being used, or will be used, by applications such as mineraldesk, colido and ICM's catalogue system. It will also be possible for mineral dealers in future to use their own details to aid them in automatic posting of photos to mindat.

Is this compulsory or can it be removed? I fail to see a need for it, personally.

Debbie,

If one was to use MineralDesk or other commercial databases designed interface with Mindat they have a place to add the AOI to facilitate the interface. I have it entered in MineralDesk but that program has issues handling large data sets. They are working to correct that. I found some other issues the MineralDesk says they are working on with Jolyon.

Thanks :-) But I don't want it on my homepage, I kind of like the idea I have control over the content on my homepage, I will never use it so wondering if it could be an option to remove.

You are the only one who sees it on your homepage.

Yes David I know but it doesn't make me like it any better :-)

I will add the option to hide it when I get a free moment.

Hi Jolyon and Katya,

I'm can't find where my API key is displayed. I have double checked and am sure that my user settings have not set it to 'hidden'.

I am very interested in the possibility of accessing the mindat database via Python.

You should see the key on your mindat homepage.
