GeneralLiesegang Rings and other things

From what I've read there are differing opinions regarding how agates are formed. There are those who believe that agates are the result of hydrothermal solutions depositing the quartz into vesicles in the enclosing rock with different color bands being caused by varying constituents being deposited within the silica over time. But that mechanism of agate formation always bothered me because it seems to me that the bands of color would be concentrated on the bottom of the agate and not be spread relatively uniformly all around. Anyway, I have been reading lately about Liesegang Rings which some people believe are the cause of the bands of color in (originally gel-like) agate and I must admit that the concept appeals to me logically. I'm curious what others think about Liesegang Rings and agate formation.

I think that Liesegang Rings account for some of what is seen in agate but not everything. Welcome to the debate.
