GeneralHilton Mine Fluorites

Hi all

I have always admired the Hilton Mine Fluorites - just love the yellow. However, I have noticed recently that there seems to be a small flood of yellow Fluorites on the market that are said to be from the Hilton Mine.

I understood that this mine was well and truly closed and in fact part of an army weapons range.

Given that there have been a number of yellow Fluorites now coming from Morocco, and many seem to have a similar colouration, is it possible that people are stating that these are from Hilton and thus possibly increasing their value somewhat? In fact some look, to me at least, to be too dark.

You only have to view some of the photos on ebay and indeed minFind to get some idea of this.

Just seems a little odd that these are surfacing at the same time as the Moroccan ones.

Or am I being too sceptical?

Cheers

You are being far too sceptical, Keith. An awful lot of material came out of Hilton over the years, from almost colourless through pale to deep yellow and even almost brown. Some was heavily included with sulphides and some had gem clarity. In truth, a wide variety, and don't forget Hilton worked numerous veins from at least a dozen adit levels. The different veins had slightly different mineralization and the metasomatic replacement flats added a further dimension. When most people think of Hilton they think of the big showy pieces from the Dowscar flats but there's a lot more to the place than the overpriced stuff you see at Tucson.

I'd have to agree with Colin. There's a lot of Hilton material out there, and some is very reasonably priced.
