GeneralBob's Rockshop?

24th Mar 2003 22:42 UTCJolyon

Is it dead?

I can't get past the front page any more, just blank pages.

Jolyon,

I found away in by using a search on Google but it only works for some of the links on the table of contents page. It appears to be archived material as Rock Talk does not show any entries after 5 February. I found a e-mail addres but it bounced. Several regulars on Rock Talk are trying to contact Bob through a friend. I had noticed that some of the regularly updated topics had not changed in sometime. Some of the group have set up a refuge on Yahoo Groups.

The same here, hes probably cleaning the site up, and maybe it lasts longer then expected.

If the bob's rockshop folk want somewhere convenient to talk that's free of spam and advertising I'll be happy to set up a 'rockhounds' topic here.

During the Tucson show, one of my regular stops was Bob's show reports. He usually starts posting show reports on his www.tucsonshow.com website. There were no show reports for 2003.

I asked around during my visits with dealers and no one saw Bob during the show. I could usually run accross him at some of the venues. He is not hard to miss. Now rockhounds.com has stopped working which leaves me to believe that Bob is MIA. He never answers his e-mails anyway so I guess the only way to track him down is to have one of his facetting buddies in Tucson stop by his apartment and knock on the door.

So Dave, keep us posted if there is any news. It is a rather uncomfortable feeling, not knowing if the site will ever be back up and running properly again.

Jolyon,

I would like a rockhound topic here. Some of use could get the word out to those that used to frequent Bobs' site.

Doug

Ok, we now have a rockhounds topic. Please spread the word!

Hello Jolyon,

I haven't been able to get anything but Bob's home page. Clicking on the Table of Contents gets me nowhere. So, for now, it appears Bob is certainly MIA. I hope it isn't worse than that. Having said that, I am now spending time at Mindat since I am not spending my free time at Bob's. I have often dropped in here for a quick scan of what is happening but haven't had the time to follow two message boards. Thanks for welcoming all of us refugees to Mindat.

Stuck with me now....

Hi Carol

Thanks for the invite, but I think I'll stick with the Mindat board until Bob's is back up and running. Jolyon has provided a "Rockhounds" page here for general chat.

KOR!

Does anyone know what happened to the extensive "Rock Talk" area of the Bob's Rock Shop website?

There was a lot of information and informative posts there - some from collectors who are no longer with us - and it all appears to be completely gone.

I suppose this is one of the major drawbacks of the Internet age: information can just go *poof*.

Bob's Rockshop was always a bit strange. He once pulled it for months because he felt that people were spamming him. McRocks jumped in and took over the slot. Don't think it ever developed quite as vigorously after that because of the loss of subscribers. Used to be some very informative posts there, but some of the better posters have succumbed to age and are no longer with us.

20th Jun 2015 17:59 UTCBob Harman

This being an old resurrected thread, I'll first say that I am not the BOB of Bob's rock shop. HENRY's posting is a bit ambiguous as the words " don't think it ever developed…." could either refer to Bob's rock shop website or the McRocks website that took over. I will assume it has to do with the original Bob's rock shop website.

But, most importantly, are their any other similar sites to Mindat, McRocks, and Jorde Fabre's forum?

Can posters, both casual and technical, develop conversation threads in English on all things mineral (not fossil)?? CHEERS…..BOB

Bob, There is http://www.mineralienatlas.de

It's a huge website with an enormous amount of information. The forum there is mostly german language, although there is no rule against english and, if you post a question in english, you will probably get responses in english too.

Another good forum is http://strahlen.org

Some parts of the forum are open to anyone, although other parts of the forum are intended to promote sharing of info on field collecting and the juiciest parts of that forum only become magically visible to those who share information on collecting spots. If you keep your good sites secret, you don't see the discussions on other collectors' favorite places, which is fair ;-)

The social media websites like Facebook and Linked-in have groups devoted to "rock talk" too, like the Mindat group on Facebook.

There is the recently started site "mineraliety" I think it is a .com which has question boards. Most of the other things these days are just photos on instagram, fliker, facebook, etc. Welcome to the new world of shorter attention span, instant friends and phone face time.

20th Jun 2015 19:15 UTCHenry Barwood

Hi Bob (Harmon). Sorry, I haven't visited either BRS or McRocks in years. Just relating my experiences from, what, a decade ago.

I was given the history of the Great Western Lapidary Equipment Co. posted on there from family of the owners of the company...tried to find it again. I may still have their contact if I can find it? If anyone has any info on the history of Great Western Lapidary Equipment Co. etc... please email me at threeriversgems@hotmail.com Thanks!
