Techniques for CollectorsNeed help with old German locality

5th Nov 2012 08:44 UTCSteve Sorrell Expert

Hi all

Posted this in the Identity Help forum... http://www.mindat.org/mesg-11-275587.html

I have a vintage micromount of malachite labelled Belldorf, Rhine Province, Prussia, Germany.

Can anyone suggest what it may be now?

Regards

Steve

Steve, I don't know whether this is the one you mean, but there is a Beldorf, Sermanychleswig-Holstein, Germany, northwest of Hamburg.

Hi Steve,

as the Rhine Province (1822-1945, part of Prussia) extended from about Bingen to Kleve, the MM for sure is not from Beldorf in Schleswig-Holstein. No Belldorf to be found, though. The only idea of mine would be Betzdorf - in old German writing it might be vaguely similar. Can you post a picture of the label?

Cheers

Wilfried

Thanks for the responses. I don't think that the label will help too much as it is only one put on the box sometime in the 1950s to 1980s. It is very clearly written as Belldorf. The other post suggested Bendorf.

Hi again, Steve,

sorry, I have been travelling. Well, if the label doesn't give a clue - if I had to put my money on it, I would go for Betzdorf rather than Bendorf. Then again - so many localities around Betzdorf, that it will be impossible to nail it down further.

Cheers

Wilfried

Although labelled as Malachite the specimen could also bee bound to be Nephrite like found in the other classmate's (jargon of that period) pockets?
