Both of these I collected around an old iron mine in the Blue Ridge Mountains, VA. the picture " unknown looks like Kayanite to me. The pic "unknown -2" has these metallic looking crystals scattered about it. i have several pieces of them, but have no idea what they are. They are not heavy, but resemble a black tourmaline with the luster of Sphalerite. any ideas??

Hey Conrad :)

They sure are nice, but I have no idea :) however......you may have more responses if you go up to the Identity help forum and post them there :) Good luck! I would love to know what they are too!!

Hi Conrad

I think the metallic looking ones are rutile, there is one with a termination on the far right of the specimen sticking out a bit, and there seems to be a reddish tint in the cleaved one in the centre. Just my thoughts.

The other one could be kyanite as you suspected.

regards,

stephanie :-)
