Improving Mindat.orgWrong scale

23rd Aug 2014 02:16 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

http://www.mindat.org/photo-624579.html this field of view is not 8cm, There have never been any zircons of that size found at this locality. At most the field of view might be 5cm.

Not being familiar with the locality nor with how large the zircons can get, why is the field of view wrong? If the field of view is 8 cm, then the largest crystal shown would be at most 4 cm. Is that too large for the location?

Yes that is much too large. The average crystal from there is 1cm, a large one would be 2cm. I have never seen one larger than 3cm and I first collected there in 1965 when you could still find lots of them.

Good 'nuf. Like I said, I'm no expect on that site. Maybe the photographer thought he had an 8-cm field of view, but some of it got chopped in the process.
