Improving Mindat.orgChrome Tremolite from Harrisville

17th Sep 2014 19:59 UTCA. M.

Is anyone aware of Chrome Tremolite ever being found at Harrisville NY? http://www.mindat.org/loc-15933.html

I received the below communication after erroneously posting photos under that locality, they have now been moved to the correct one in Balmat:

"I have visited that mine many times and have spoken with the geologists there over the years and no one to my knowledge has ever found any chrome tremolite at that location." (New York State Museum)

If the entry of Chrome Tremolite is in error then it should be removed.

The link you give does not go to Harrisville, and Mindat does not record any chrome-tremolite under Harrisville, so I'm a bit confused. Which is the chrome tremolite entry that is in error?

Looking at the entry, it seems that someone put Harrisville in St. Lawrence County instead of Lewis County. Harrisville is a village within Diana Township, Lewis County. Because of the Gouverneur Talc Company #4 mine's proximity to Harrisville village, many labels are seen with that as a town name. Nonetheless, chrome-tremolite has not been found there, but chrome-tremolite was listed there attributed to the "St. Lawrence Mineral Club", probably by someone who talked with a club member and then forgot what name was actually said. I'll check the other localities listed for "Harrisville" and see if they are in the correct township/county, as Diana is a boundary town with St. Lawrence Co. and the other "Harrisville" occurrences may be similarly confused. It doesn't help that the mine name utilizes a company named for a town in St. Lawrence County.

PS As suspected, one place was actually in Pitcairn in nearby St. Lawrence County.

Alfredo, I meant the Valentine Deposit, we passed through Harrisville on our recent visit there (as Van mentions), so that's the source of my mistake.

Thank you!!
