Aristarainite from
Tincalayu Mine, Antofagasta de la Sierra Department, Catamarca Province, Argentina

Locality type:Open-Cast Mine
Classification
Species:Aristarainite
Formula:Na2MgB12O20 · 8H2O
Comments:Aristarainite occurs chiefly in well-formed isolated crystals elongated on <010> or tabular parallel to {100}. The elongate crystals average 0.3 mm in length and 0.05 x 0.05 mm in cross section. The dimensions of the largest tabular crystals are 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.1 mm. Rosette-like aggregates of tabular crystals that reach a maximum dimension of 1 mm are also found. In short-wave U.V. it shows cream-white fluorescence and slight phosphorescence. Aristarainite is found in small crystals in a matrix of borax and kernite. In addition it is associated with small amounts of rivadavite, ezcurrite…ameghenite and macallisterite

The mineral is fairly stable but should be kept in a well sealed container for long term storage
