Any ideas on how i can improve this photo? I think it might look a bit two dimensional, but what else? like the other picture, it was in the public galleries, but after i updated it, it changed to only my gallery.

Alex,

Others who know more about photography than I will almost certainly comment here. As with all pictures of micros, or almost all, depth of field has always been the elephant in the room that everyone ignored till recently. Recently means the advent of image stacking technology that has greatly improved the out of focus portions of micro images. Perhaps some day they will improve it more like using an electron beam to scan specimens and create images that are all in focus and then use computer programs to map the colors back into the image. Yours seems like a good photo but spoiled to some extent by the lack of depth of field which might possibly be improved by image stacking. Micro photography is an unforgiving master. I'm not sure why your picture was placed in your user gallery, perhaps the manager or expert who did that noted there were already a lot of micro images of acanthite from that locality in our database and that your crystals even though they are micros are not very sharp crystals. You say that the yellow orange mineral is that is associated with the acanthite is unknown. If we knew what it was that, it might be enough to bump it into the general gallery.

In our effort to improve the quality of the images in our database, we are often now placing new images in the user only galleries even though there may already be images/specimens inferior to it already in our general gallery. Ideally the proper procedure would be to go through our general gallery and consign the iinferior images/specimens there before consigning a waiting image to user only status. It has to be discouraging for people wishing to contribute images and finding their offerings rejected when they know full well that there are inferior images/specimens in the general gallery. The managers and experts are all volunteers and there is juts not enough time to go through the galleries to check and look for and remove low quality images/specimen before placing new images in a user only gallery. As it is we are loosing the battle in approving new images and the number of images waiting for approval keep growing. Probably with the amount of time that it has taken me to write this response to your question I could have vetted ten images which would hardly make a dent in the backlog.

Hello Alex,

The only improvements that I can see is a better specimen and more depth of field. There is no shortage of quality photos of acanthite or silver from that locality so it also comes down to the question "will this photo provide any new information that is not already provided by existing photos?" if not it is less likley to be approved.
