Improving Mindat.orgNiagara Falls Quarry error?

12th Sep 2008 20:51 UTCDonald Lapham 🌟

Folks,

I have noticed that there is an entry for a quarry in Niagara Falls, NY (locality 16952). The coordinates place it on the edge of the Niagara River Gorge. I cannot confirm if there was a quarry at that location, but I can confirm that there is a quarry located at coordinates 43°7'43"N 78°57'24" W. This quarry is the LaFarge Corp. (formerly Niagara Redlands) Quarry at 8875 Quarry Rd., Niagara, NY. It is not located in Niagara Falls, NY; actually both locations (16952) and the LaFarge Quarry are in the Township of Niagara. I'm not sure if the existing locality should be changed with my information or if a new locality should be entered.

The LaFarge Quarry was well known for purple fluorite and root beer red sphalerite along with calcite, selenite, and dolomite. Unfortunately economic conditions closed the quarry in 2007 and collecting is no longer allowed.

Thanks.

Reference given to the addition of this locality is the article:

A Systematic Study of the Minerals of the Niagara Stone Division Quarry, Eric G. Harnum, 1968.

Unfortunately I don't have that article to refer back to, but I believe you are correct, that it refers to the the old Redland Quarry. I've seen often enough, Redland specimens attributed to a Niagara Falls locality (may have been merely the business or plant address for Redland Inc.?). If anyone has access to this article to confirm suspicions, it would be appreciated.

A clip from Buffalo Business First News, dated: Wednesday, April 2, 1997:

"Redland Quarries NY Inc., a manufacturer of crushed stone and asphalt products, was formed with the merger of Redland Niagara Inc. and Frontier Stone Inc. Redland Quarries consists of three limestone quarries and six asphalt plants in Niagara Falls, Lockport and Gasport. The company sells to residential, commercial, agricultural and highway users and contractors throughout Western New York, Pennsylvania and Canada. The main office is at the site of the former Frontier Stone offices in Lockport. The combined businesses will employ about 100."

Here's hoping someone will come up with a copy of this reference so we can confidently make this correction!

PS: A specimen from my own collection. The old label notes this as coming from Niagara Falls, NY, but I believe it is pretty obviously a Redland Quarry piece.

Mark,

The reference you quote, Harnum, 1968, can you tell me the magazine that is from? I was able to dig up the Rocks and Minerals 1985 reference that is listed on the locality's page and it does not give any information on the quarry's location. Perhaps the Harnum, 1968 reference does.

Thanks,

Don

Rocks & Minerals

Quarry located at intersection of Lockport and Packard Roads, between Niagara Falls and Lewiston.

Updated the Redlands and Frontier quarries. On early localities, the coordinates are often for the nearest large town.

David,

I have found the copy of the August, 1968 Rocks and Minerals and concur with your quote regarding the location of the quarry. I can also confirm that this is the same quarry that I have visited and it is located at the coordinates 43°7'43"N 78°57'24" W. The coordinates in Mindat for this locality should be changed.

The quarry is now owned by LaFarge Corp. and is currently inactive due to economic reasons.

Thanks,

Don
