Identity HelpLooking For Modern name of Old Japanese Locality

31st Oct 2014 04:22 UTCSteve Hardinger 🌟 Expert

I've run across an old (Warren Mathew Foote label; so this puts it 1895-1911) anorthite specimen with a locality given as Iwoshima, Idzu Island, Japan. I can't find a modern equivalent for this locality. Can anyone shed any light?

And one minute after posting this I found what I wanted: http://www.mindat.org/loc-41050.html. So messageboard editors….feel free to delete this thread.

Most likely the "Iwoshima" part is actually Miyake-jima, where lots of anorthite crystals erupted out in 1874, first published in 1889. Shortly thereafter many were sent to museums in Europe.

The loose feldspars from "Iwojima" look quite different from Miyake's and are mostly andesine rather than anorthite.

I believe the modern name in Mindat parlance is: : Izu Osima, Izu Archipeligo, Tokyo Metropolis, Japan
