Hi Kari,

It would help a bit if you used a little bit less bright / more even light when taking the photograph, if possible.

Can you tell use where you found this sample, and what the rock looked like where it was? Did you try to scratch glass with this sample? Too me, if looks a bit like some garnet, perhaps almandine, with some black biotite etc.

You can also try to scratch the sample carefully with a needle or a small knife blade to see which is the harder of the two.

Cheers,

They want us to guess what it is. My guess is garnet. It will be interesting to find out who guessed right LOL.

Kari,

If you live in Finland, as indicated by your Finnish name, send me a private message an email, in Finnish language.

You could always mail a second, similar mineral or this piece itself to me & I believe I can sort it out for you quickly & take some more pictures for you, then send back the sample. I do this a lot for my rock hound friends - I just recently wnet thru almost 200 samples & packed them back for returning... Anyways, this looks, on a quick glance, like typical, broken Finnish garnet to me.

Oh, and Kari, you can always use Google translator (google kääntäjä) for messages here, if you don't feel comfortable with English...

Cheers,
