Mineralogical ClassificationCurrent status of Violan?

3rd Feb 2016 17:06 UTCVik Vanrusselt Expert

Hello all,

I'd like to know the current IMA status of Violan (manganese bearing Diopside?).

Mindat has it as "discredited", while Mineralienatlas has it as "variety" (comparable to e.g. "Amethyst is a variety of Quartz"), i.e. not formally discredited?

And while I'm on the subject, why would the IMA (or Mindat?) "discredit" some varieties (e.g. Andalusite var. Viridine, Diopside var. Schefferite), but not others (e.g. Andalusite var. Chiastolite, Diopside var. Chromian Diopside)?

Thanks in advance,

Vik

A variety can only be "discredited" if it was previously considered to be an independent species. In other words, it is the "species status" that is being discredited; the mineral is being demoted from species to variety. Chiastolite was always known as an andalusite variety, not a species (as far as I know), so there is no reason to discredit that status.
