GeneralUpper Peninsula Withdrawals

31st Aug 2010 03:25 UTCScott Sadlocha

Well, this weekend I returned from a weeklong trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and I can honestly say, I am missing it. Though I did not get to do everything I wanted on the trip (do we ever?), I was able to do a lot and just relax while having a good time. It is not just the minerals to be found there, though that is admittedly a large part of it. Really, it is the entire "package" of the area. The minerals, the outdoors, the history, the people, the beauty. Maybe it is because I grew up in a large city and always dreamed of outdoor adventure, but there were times when the rugged beauty of the area was just breathtaking. A lot of moments spent just stopping, standing, and admiring.

This was planned as a camping trip with my family, so we did a lot of activities together (including spending time at a few old mines and dumps!) and I hope to have an article soon on the mineralogical aspect. I was just hoping that posting a bit would help me feel better. :) Now that I am back home, it just feels so bland and boring here. Up there, I could go literally minutes in any direction and find something exciting. I know that eventually I will get back to my routine of making do with what I have around here, and finding rocks and minerals any place I can. I was just wondering if anyone else has any similar feelings. I know there are others that live right in these types of great places, but there are many that also live close enough to visit, but then have to leave. It really does feel a bit like "locality withdrawals" or something like that. Ah well, at least I have the Detroit Show to look forward to in a little over a month, and I have my findings to go through!

I have had a burning desire to return to the U.P. since getting to explore the area only once, so far. Scott I know just what you mean.

So many rocks, so little time.

About a decade ago I went and had such a blast that I lost track of time and missed my flight home by a day. I had to get back for work and was scared stiff of having to pay kilobucks to get a ticket immediately. I kept my cool with a very worried look and although the airline guy said it was over booked by 17, he booked me home with my dead ticket and had me on the plane in twenty minutes!!! A wonderful end to a fantastic voyage.

Ahh, nostalgia! I got to hang out and explore the Copper Country for five years while I attended da Tech, a looong time ago! I still miss it, and I've made a few trips back for the Mineral Retreat. Hmm, might be time to go again.

I hope ya'll will come again late next year when, hopefully, the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum will be in its new building!

I am going to try to be up there twice next year actually. At least that is the plan for right now, hopefully it works out. I would definitely like to come up for the CCMR next year, and once more earlier in the year, before the bugs get crazy and it gets too late in the spring/summer seasons. Maybe April or early May. I wish I was a bit closer, then it would be easier. I am sure there are others in a similar predicament, with localities or regions they love to visit.
