Would adding Mindat photos to a persons iPhoto library for personal use (read that as for personal enjoyment) be breaking any rules?:-S

Photographers upload their photographs here to share with people through mindat.org - however the assumption is in most cases that these photos remain on mindat.org and are not distributed further.

Consequently we cannot give ANY permission for use of photos beyond mindat, except for those marked with Creative Commons or Public Domain licences where the photographer has specifically allowed such reuse.

In reality, no-one is really likely to care that much if you download photos purely for your own personal enjoyment - not that it's very easy to do that these days. But officially we cannot give permission for this.

In the US, there is the "Fair Use" doctrine for copyrighted materials. This is what gives you the authority to photocopy magazine articles for your own use. You can also lend other people your books for their perusal. As long as things are reasonable, such use is OK. (Posting photos on another website would not be considered a fair use)

Thank you Jolyon for clearing that up for me.

I will follow the official view... always like to play it straight.(tu)

Best,

Steve.
