GeneralUnique Inclusion in Herkimer Quartz
18th Jun 2019 04:23 UTCPaul Stephen Cyr
weeks ago at a private claim in Mohawk Township, New York. It was a great weekend, and both of us located INCREDIBLE pockets, bearing all different size of Herks. This is one crystal that he found nearby- which he was kind enough to follow up on my persistent offer for, as it was right at the spit where I planned to dig next. This was a non pocket, subsurface crystal. From the shape of it alone, I had a mad desire for it. I think partly out of thanks for letting him dig next to my pocket (where he located one of his own, that bore an 11-crystal cluster that he since reassembled). Very happy to keep this in my collection now.
After inspecting in the sunlight, I spotted an inclusion in the tip- a “crown of thorns”. I immediately took it to be marcasite, but now am not so sure... I have never heard of rutile in a Herkimer quartz, but the red translucence and reticulation points an obvious comparison at that mineral.
