Identity HelpBladed calcite?

1st Nov 2020 19:23 UTCScott DeLano

Probably a stupid question but have you seen what appears to be bladed calcite crystals?  I have not but the sample came from an area with a lot of calcite and it is the same color as the calcite here.  Streaks like calcite.  Same hardness.  Have just never seen blades before...

Calcite can form very thin bladelike crystals; the translation of the German name is paper-spar.

Geevor and Levant mine in Cornwall produced quite a lot of them.

Keep safe.

Yes, these are actually very flat rhombohedra. Test with a drop of acid.

Scott, could you post a photo of your specimen?

Scott; Do a calcite photo gallery search here on Mindat with the modifier "angel wing", the habit name for this bladed type of calcite.  There are a number of photos.

This was bought as "paper calcite" it has a huge blade on the back. It is highly UV reactive 😁

This Mangano even has some blades around the base.
